Veteran Bowler Category: RUTH KUBAT

Ruth Kubat
Age: 85

Ruth Kubat has been bowling since 1945 starting at the Roman’s Bowling Alley on Tuesday nights. She has continued to bowl on Tuesday nights for over 60 years.

She continued her bowling, joining leagues at Starlite Lanes, Polish Falcons, Cayuga Lanes, Sicz Lanes and Rainbow Lanes. She bowled in several WIBC tournaments and has a 30 year NYS Women’s Bowling Association participation pin. She has also competed in various tournaments in the area aside from the local city association tournaments. There was the Post-Standard tournament in Syracuse, the Peter Pan tournament and the past few years in the Old Timers tournament. She averaged in the 150’s most of her bowling career.

Ruth had to overcome adversity in her life after being involved in an automobile accident that resulted in the loss of her right leg. She thought she might never bowl again. But as determined a bowler as Ruth is, she has made a comeback and is still at the bowling lanes every week. To quote Ruth, “people don’t ask her to do anything on Tuesday nights because that is her bowling night”. She may have to work hard to break a 100 each game but she is there playing the game she dearly loves.

Meritorious Service Category: NANCY JEAN BARSKI
Nancy Jean Barski
Deceased

Nancy Jean Barski had bowled for over thirty years. Her and love and devotion for the game was insurmountable and was only outweighed by her commitment to the youth bowlers she coached.

Nancy was secretary of the Girl’s Commercial League at Cayuga lanes for over twenty years, one of the largest leagues in the association. She was influential in getting bowlers interested in joining the league. As a Co-Chair of the Women’s Masters, she persuaded many young women to sign up and try to qualify. She was not a high average bowler but that never deterred her love for the game. She had participated in several NYS tournaments and many local tournaments. She had a high game of 256 and series of 624. When she was unable to bowl herself, she was a spectator, there to cheer you on and encourage good sportsmanship.

Her work with the juniors was what gave her the most satisfaction and joy. She encouraged so many up and coming young bowlers. She worked with the youth for over 25 years, serving on the Board of Directors, as 2nd Vice President and lastly 1st vice-president. She was secretary and coach of the Al Lang Girls & Boys League. For over 25 years, she worked with the youth bowlers Sunday Mornings at Polish Falcons. As a tribute to her, the league was renamed, Nancy’s Kid’s League.

Over the years, Nancy has donated of her time and financially to the youth organization, scholarships as well as the Women’s Citizen Masters Tournament.

If there were more bowling advocates around like Nancy Jean Barski – everyone in Auburn would be bowling somewhere, with the passing a huge void was felt by many.
